Located 2 1/2 miles northeast of Natchez, the land which became Rawles was granted to Samuel Gibson prior to 1792. In 1858 Fredrick Stanton, a rich cotton broker from Ireland, purchased the place for $18,000.
Mr. Stanton's daughter, Elizabeth, was the wife of Maj. John Rawl, an office in Nathan Bedford Forrest's Brigade. The area was named for Major Rawl.
