Gift, located eleven miles of west of Corinth, was first known as Jones, for "Uncle Jimmy Jones," who built his home here in 1864 and donated log school house to be built in this section. J.N. Suitor, the largest landowner in the community, donated land for a negro school, and the Suitor School was erected.
In the early days of the town an itinerant jeweler named J.E. Gift came to Corinth and amassed a small fortune. Being deeply interested in education, he made a gift of $10,000, or half the amount necessary to build a large consolidated school at this site. The beneficiaries named the school and the settlement Gift in his honor.
