About Attala County, Mississippi...



Attala County, Mississippi, named after the fictional Native American heroine Atala from François-René de Chateaubriand’s novel Atala, is a county with a deep historical and cultural significance. Established on December 23, 1833, it is located in the central part of the state, within the hills of Mississippi, and Kosciusko is its county seat. Its story reflects the broader history of the region, marked by Native American heritage, European-American settlement, agricultural development, and significant involvement in the Civil Rights Movement.


Native American Roots and Early Settlement


Long before European settlers arrived, the area that would become Attala County was inhabited by Indigenous peoples, primarily the Choctaw. The Choctaw lived in well-organized communities, practiced agriculture, and had a complex social structure. Marriage Records - We have thousands of Attala County marriage dates here on our website. These dates will assist you greatly in obtaining a copy of the original marriage license. Contact the Mississippi Department of Health for marriages that took place between January 1, 1926 and for January 1, 1942 to present by mail by using this marriage record application. Divorce Records - Prior to 1859, divorce proceedings were introduced as private bills in the State Legislature. References to these can be found in the books Index of Mississippi Session Acts 1817 - 1865 and Index to the Laws of the Mississippi Territory. These books can be found at the Mississippi Department of Archives and History as well as many other genealogy repositories and libraries across the state. After 1859, Attala County divorce proceedings were filed in the Attala County Chancery Clerk's office.
