The Bear Creek community is located three miles north of McCool. It was named for a nearby creek. The date the community started is unsure and the early settlers were mostly slaveowners. The settlers built a log church soon after their arriving, making it large enough for their slaves to worship with them.
The Francher Post Office was located two miles west of Bear Creek in 1885 and it continued until 1900. W.H. Smith, a pioneer settler who made his hime in the vicinity of Unity School was appointed postmaster.
