Named for Burket Thompson, Burketsville was located about 7 miles north of Kosciusko. Burketsville reached its peak in the 1840s as an important trading post in this area. It is claimed that the community began its demise with the murder of Willis Wingo by a merchant from the town of Marks. Whatever the reason, Burkettsville became extinct about 1870.
