Chapel Hill was located in the northeastern part of Attala County. A small one=teacher subscription supported school known as Poplar Springs School, was built in the community before 1878. This log schoolhouse served the area for religious as well as educational uses.
With shifting populations Poplar Springs School was closed in the late 1870s and another school was built. This new school was two miles to the north on McCool Road and was called Beech Springs School.
In 1880 Chapel Hill Methodist Church was organized. An A-frame building was erected and served as both a school and a church. A seperate schoolhouse was built later, and when the church burned in 1895, the school served as a house of worship until a new church was built in 1910.
