Liberty Chapel, Mississippi in Attala County

(submitted by and photos by Gerald & Tammy Westmoreland)

Liberty Chapel Church, 5 miles north of Ethel on the old Rock Port Road, was established at a very early date and provided a name for the surrounding community. Date of the establishment of the church is not clear but a Masonic Lodge built long before 1860 is supposed to be the second oldest in the county. The Liberty Chapel Public School was formed here in 1875.

Prior to 1860 this was an industrial community. Tim's Tanyard and Mathis' Shoe Shop carried on a flourishing business which continued until after the end of the Civil War. Phoenix Mills, operated by Kimbrough and Thompson, was located on Rock Port Road about a mile and a half east of the church. A blow to the community came in 1866 when the Phoenix Mills were moved a few miles to the north and became Cook's Mill.
