North Center, about 16 miles north of Kosciusko was founded as a school community before the Civil War. It was the first public school established in what later became the Carmack School District.

The first building was of sawed lumber in rough box style and had a fireplace. The seats were hand-planed logs with pegs inserted through auger holes at each end for legs. This building was located one mile south of Montgomery County on the Vaiden-French Camp Road.

The place became extinct in 1932 when the North Center School District was abolished and was transferred to the Carmack District.
