Pilgrim's Rest was formed about 5 miles NW of Ethel in 1844, and was known as a distinctive Baptist Church Community. The Baptists who organized and supported their church in the early days came from Georgia in the 1840s.
Pilgrim's Rest Church was organized in 1844, the land for the church and cemetery being donated by Leonard Rice who along with his wife were charter members of the church. Other charter members included Mr. and Mrs. William Cole, Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Peeler, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick White, and Mrs. Polly Meek.
