Possumneck was established in 1830 and located on what was formerly the Kosciusko-West Station Road 13 miles NW of Kosciusko. In the early days the place was considered a very backward place and there was much disorder with a man named Herod, who seems to have been the leader with the rougher element. On one occasion when trouble had arisen, a court witness kept refering to King Herod. The judge asked, "King of What?" and the witness promptly replied "King of Possumneck". The name stuck and the community has been called that ever since.
Possumneck Public School was established in 1875 but was closed in 1930.
