When the schoolhouse was built in this community, about 7 miles NW of Kosciusko, it was located near several springs at the foot of a hill where a small valley provided a playground for children, as well as room to hitch the horses and teams used in transportation. The name Springdale was thus suggested for the place in 1868.
A post office known as Hughes was located here in the early 1890s and was kept in the sotre of E.W. Hughes, with Mrs. Hughes serving as postmistress.
