About Hinds County, Mississippi...

Hinds County is located in the West-Central portion of Mississippi. Hinds County was formed on February 12, 1821 and was named in honor of Gen. Thomas Hinds, hero of the War of 1812 and a United States Congressman. Jackson, the Capital of Mississippi and the largest city in the state is located in the county.

The dual Hinds County seats are Raymond and Jackson.

The county has a total area of 877.35 square miles of which 869.18 square miles is land and 8.16 square miles (0.93%) is water. The population recorded in the 1830 Federal Census was 8,645. The 2010 census recorded 245,285 residents in the county.

Neighboring counties are Madison County (northeast), Rankin County (east), Simpson County (southeast), Copiah County (south), Claiborne County (southwest), Warren County (west), and Yazoo County (northwest). Communities in the county include Clinton, Jackson, Raymond, Bolton, Byram, Edwards, Learned, Utica, Terry, Brownsville, Dabney Crossroads, Midway, Oakly, Pocahontas, and Turkey Creek.
