About Humphreys County, Mississippi...


Humphreys County is located in the Delta Region of Mississippi. Humphreys County was formed on March 28, 1918 and was named in honor of Benjamin G. Humphreys, a general for the Confederate States of America during the civil war, and later a governor of the state. Humphreys County was named Farm-Raised Catfish Capital of the World in 1976.


The county seat is Belzoni, named for the 19th century Italian explorer Giovanni Battista Belzoni.


The county has a total area of 431.16 square miles of which 418.09 square miles is land and 13.07 square miles (3.03%) is water. The population recorded in the 1920 Federal Census was 19,192. The 2010 census recorded 9,375 residents in the county.


Neighboring counties are Sunflower County (north), Leflore County (northeast), Holmes County (east), Yazoo County (south), Sharkey County (southwest), and Washington County (west). Communities in the county include Belzoni, Isola, Louise, Silver City, Lodi, and Midnight.
