About Sharkey County, Mississippi...


Sharkey County is located in the southern Delta Region of Mississippi. Sharkey County was formed on March 29, 1876 from Warren, Washington and Issaquena counties. The county was named for Judge William L. Sharkey, who once was provisional Governor of Mississippi.


A portion of Sharkey County was taken in 1918 and added to help form the new county of Humphreys, to the northeast. Deer Creek runs entirely through Sharkey County.


The county has a total area of 434.88 square miles of which 427.71 square miles is land and 7.17 square miles (1.65%) is water. The population recorded in the 1880 Federal Census was 6,306. Sharkey County's population peaked in the 1910 census at 15,694. The 2010 census recorded just 4,916 residents in the county.


Neighboring counties are Washington County (north), Humphreys County (northeast), Yazoo County (east), and Issaquena County (south & west). Other communities in the county include Forest, Morton, Lake (partly in Newton County), Sebastopol (small portion in Leake County), Forkville, Harperville, Hillsboro, Homewood, Ludlow, Midway, Norris, and Pulaski.
