About Tishomingo County, Mississippi...


Tishomingo County is located in the extreme northeast corner of Mississippi on the Alabama and Tennessee borders. Tishomingo County was formed on February 9, 1836 and the name is indian for "warrior chief." Woodall Mountain, which at an elevation of 806 ft. is the highest point in Mississippi, is located in the county.


Tishomingo State Park is located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in Tishomingo County, Mississippi, north of Tupelo, Mississippi. Activities in the park including canoeing, rock climbing, fishing and hiking. The park was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s. Many of the original buildings are still standing. The park is named for an early leader of the Chickasaw nation, Chief Tishomingo (1734-1838).


The county has a total area of 444.54 square miles of which 424.12 square miles is land and 20.41 square miles (4.59%) is water. The population recorded in the 1840 Federal Census was 6,681. The counties population peaked in 1860 at 24,149. The 2010 census recorded just 19,593 residents in the county.


Neighboring counties are Hardin County, Tennessee (north), Lauderdale County, Alabama (northeast), Colbert County, Alabama (east), Franklin County, Alabama (southeast), Itawamba County (south), Prentiss County (southwest), and Alcorn County (northwest). Iuka is the county seat. Other communities in the county include Belmont, Burnsville, Golden, Tishomingo, Paden, Dennis, Doskie, Midway, Oldham, Pittsburg, and Short.
