About Tunica County, Mississippi...

Tunica County is located in the northeastern portion of the Delta Region of Mississippi on the Mississippi River. Tunica County was formed on February 9, 1836 and was named after the Tunica Native Americans. Today Tunica County is an important center of tourism in the state built around numerous casinos and resorts. The Tunica area is now the third-largest gaming region in the United States, after Las Vegas and Atlantic City. Its effect on the local economy has spurred population growth in unincorporated parts of the county outside Tunica proper.

The county has a total area of 480.78 square miles of which 454.81 square miles is land and 25.97 square miles (5.40%) is water. The population recorded in the 1840 Federal Census was 821. The counties population peaked in 1940 at 22,610. The 2010 census recorded just 10,778 residents in the county.

Neighboring counties are Crittenden County, Arkansas (north), DeSoto County (northeast), Tate County (east), Panola County (southeast), Quitman County (south), Coahoma County (southwest), Phillips County, Arkansas (southwest), and Lee County, Arkansas (west). The town of Tunica is the county seat. Other communities in the county include North Tunica, Austin, Banks, Bowdre, Clayton, Dubbs, Dundee, Evansville, Hollywood, Lost Lake, Maud, Mhoon Landing, Prichard, Tunica Resorts (formerly Robinsonville), and White Oak.
